Campeonato Paulista A1 - Week 19

In a change from the usual format we're going to do a minute by minute update of what happened in the last round of the Paulista. Two places were up for grabs in "The Four" and the final relegation place would be decided. Times are determined by the goals hitting the back of the net.

1: Goal! Portuguesa 1-0 Ituano

Big blow for Ituano as Thiago Gomes puts Portuguesa ahead and after losing 5 in a row it's the last thing Ituano needed. It also lifts Portuguesa into "The Four" and leaves São Paulo outside the play offs

8: Goal! Santos 1-0 Sertãozinho, Santo André 0-1 São Paulo

The league leaders take the lead against relegation Sertãozinho thanks to Germano. Meanwhile São Paulo who must win to guarantee a place in "The Four" take the lead at already qualified Santo André thanks to Washington and climb back into "The Four" and it's now Prudente who are outside.

11: Goal! Botafogo SP 1-0 Monte Azul

20: Goal! Santo André 0-2 São Paulo

São Paulo look like they have cemented their place in the end of season fun and games after Dagoberto doubled their lead at Santo André. Santo André are safe in the four and have rested some players ahead of the play offs starting this weekend.

Corinthians get themselves back in the game through a strike from Ronaldo whilst Santos double their lead against Sertãozinho through Alex Sandro.

36: Goal! Botafogo SP 2-0 Monte Azul

Botafogo double their lead against Monte Azul as Xuxa converts from the penalty spot.

38: Goal! Santos 3-0 Sertãozinho, Santo André 1-2 São Paulo

It's all too easy for the league leaders as Zé Eduardo hits their 60th goal of the campaign so far. Meanwhile in the Top 4 clash the nerves will begin to jangle for São Paulo as Rodrigao pulls a goal back for Santo André.

So as things stand at the break, it's as you were for "The Four" with Prudente and São Paulo in the box seat for the play off and Ituano currently occupying the last relegation place.

47: Goal! Portuguesa 2-1 Ituano

Alerted by the fact they were heading down to A2 at the break Ituano are quickly out of the blocks in the second half and halve the defecit thank to Juninho.

53: Goal! Paulista 2-1 Palmeiras

Nervous times ahead for Paulista as Lincoln pulls a goal back for the "Big Green". If they were to be pegged back it would put Paulista back into relegation trouble

61: Goal! Santos 3-2 Sertãozinho

The relegated side are having a right go now and they've reduced the deficit to a single goal thanks to a second from Thiago Silvy, who converts from the penalty spot.

63: Goal! Santo André 1-3 São Paulo

A third São Paulo goal from Miranda is a hammer blow to the chances of Portuguesa and Corinthians making "The Four" especially with Prudente still leading São Caetano as well.

71: Goal! Oeste 2-1 Rio Branco

It's about pride for Oeste and the opportunity to qualify for the Campeão do Interior as they retake the lead against Rio Branco. Ricardo Bueno with the goal from the penalty spot.

75: Goal! Corinthians 5-1 Rio Claro

And it's becoming a procession now as Dentinho gets his second of the game to put Corinthians 5-1 up and leave them relying on events happening elsewhere.

79: Goal! Portuguesa 2-2 Ituano

Woah! Drama as Ituano haul themselves out of the relegation zone with an equaliser from Lincon that could just about put paid to Portuguesa's chances of making "The Four". Rio Claro, losing heavily at Corinthians, are now staring into the abyss.

80: Goal! Mogi Mirim 1-0 Ponte Preta

The only game without a goal so far finally gets one ten minutes from time as Fernando Gabriel puts Mogi Mirim ahead in a game of little to no consequence for either side.

81: Goal! Paulista 3-1 Palmeiras

Paulista must be safe now after Samuel grabs their third goal against a lethargic Palmeiras side. There must be something about facing Palmeiras on the last day, Botafogo-RJ defeated them to stay in the Campeonato Série A last year.

85: Goal! Portuguesa 2-3 Ituano

Surely it's all over for Portuguesa now and it's joy for Ituano as they are on the verge of breaking their 5 game losing streak and will look forward to another year in the A1. Roque Júnior, yes the Roque Júnior who was at Leeds United and Bayer Leverkusen, with the vital goal for Ituano.

90: Goal! Oeste 3-1 Bragantino

Oeste wrap up the game with a third from Ricardo Bueno, his second of the game. It's confirms the win for Oeste and it will see them finish in midtable above Palmeiras and gives them the last spot in the Campeão do Interior

94: Goal! Santos 4-2 Sertãozinho

Santos hold off a determined fightback from Sertãozinho as Marcel grabs a fourth for the league leaders to leave them with an incredible 61 goals from just 19 games in the regular season.

So the results from the final round of the season were

Corinthians 5-1 Rio Claro
Santos 4-2 Sertãozinho
Santo André 1-3 São Paulo
Paulista 3-1 Palmeiras
Oeste 3-1 Rio Branco
Botafogo 2-1 Monte Azul
Mogi Mirim 1-0 Ponte Preta
Mirassol 3-0 Bragantino
Prudente 1-0 São Caetano
Portuguesa 2-3 Ituano

The outcome of it all sees Prudente and São Paulo join runaway leaders Santos and Santo André in the play offs. Current Champions Corinthians are denied the opportunity to defend their crown as they finish a point off the play offs in fifth. At the bottom, Ituano staged their own version of the great escape after spending much of the day in the relegation spot. Paulista, occupying the last spot as the round started hauled themselved out and it was Rio Claro who ended up going down into Série A2.

The play-offs begin this weekend. The games are staged over two legs on a home and away basis. If the ties finish level after the two legs the highest places team go through to the next stage. Basically it means Santos are four 0-0 draws away from the title. The first game sees São Paulo host Santos at the Morumbi on Sunday followed by Prudente against Santo André at the Prudentão. The return games take place the following Sunday.

Of course their is the Campeão do Interior as well, in which the best Non-based São Paulo teams play off for their own bragging rights. In the first leg Oeste will host São Caetano and Botafogo SP will take on Ponte Preta. Both these games take place on Saturday with the return games the Saturday after.
