Independiente 1-0 LDU Quito
3-3 on points, LDU Quito advances on goal difference
The Premier Sports TV cameras were present to witness holders
Independiente make an exit at their first stage of the competition after
failing to overcome a two goal first leg deficit against 2009 champions
LDU Quito of Ecuador. The home side made nine changes from the team
beaten in Quito a fortnight ago as they went for all out attack in order
to try and progress into the last eight. The only goal of the game came
on the stroke of half time when a deflected shot from Leonel Núñez
found the back of the net. In the second half Independiente pushed for
the second goal that would take the tie to a penalty shoot out but the
LDU Quito defence was strong and frustration got the better of the home
side when Fernando Godoy was shown a straight red card three minutes
from time for a poor challenge on Claudio Bieler.
LDU Quito will now face the winner of the tie between São Paulo of Brazil and Libertad of Paraguay in the quarter finals.
